La Carihuela is the charming seaside district of Torremolinos, located on the western edge of Málaga’s Costa del Sol. Once a traditional fishing village, it has retained much of its authentic Andalusian character while evolving into one of the region’s most popular coastal destinations.

The name La Carihuela is believed to refer to its origins as a small fishing community. For generations, local families relied on the sea for their livelihood, and the neighbourhood developed independently from the main town of Torremolinos due to the steep 30-metre rise separating the two. Fishing remained the heart of daily life until the tourism boom of the 1950s transformed the area. As visitors flocked to the Costa del Sol, La Carihuela became renowned for its beachfront restaurants, where freshly caught seafood and the famous pescaíto frito (Andalusian fried fish) quickly earned an outstanding reputation. At its peak, the village was home to a fleet of around 40 fishing boats.

Originally, La Carihuela consisted of a row of modest fishermen’s cottages and simple beach huts, a few of which can still be seen today along Calle Los Perros. The area’s transformation began in 1948 with the opening of the iconic El Remo nightclub, followed by the construction of landmark hotels including the Hotel Pez Espada, Hotel Tropicana, Hotel Montemar, and several others that helped establish Torremolinos as one of Spain’s pioneering holiday resorts.

Today, La Carihuela perfectly blends its rich maritime heritage with a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle. Visitors can stroll along its lively palm-lined promenade, browse boutique shops, enjoy spectacular sea views, or dine at one of the many restaurants serving some of the freshest seafood on the Costa del Sol. The neighbourhood is also home to the beautiful Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen, making La Carihuela a destination where history, culture, and seaside charm come together.

Torremolinos was the first of the Costa del Sol resorts to be developed and is still the most popular in the region. The beach which extends for nearly 8km (5.0 miles), includes cycle and skating lanes alongside the fully illuminated promenade and features many beach bars and local chiringuitos. The eastern part of the beach, known as Los Álamos, offers a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere all-year round. They also have windsurfing and kitesurfing among many water sports activities to offer during the summer season.

Located between the beaches of La Carihuela and Playamar is El Bajondillo. It is an impressive expanse of beach 40 meters wide and 1 kilometer long, right in the center of the town and one of the most visited. Definitely an urban beach, it is highly rated by residents and tourists due to its variety of services. Any time of the year tourists can enjoy the sea breeze. The beach restaurants provide different types of local fish cuisines freshly caught within the day!

At the seaside, there are the usual rentals available of bicycles, mopeds, electric scooters, jets skis, surf boards, parasailing, sailing, paddle, ski boats and snorkelling.

Nerja is a charming coastal town that offers a unique blend of experiences. Located on the eastern Costa del Sol, it has a relaxed atmosphere during the day that transforms into a lively and inviting scene after sunset. For many visitors, exploring Nerja’s evening entertainment is one of the highlights of their stay.

Compared to some of the larger resorts along the Costa del Sol, Nerja’s nightlife is more laid-back, reflecting its popularity with families and older travellers. Even so, during the summer season the town comes alive with a great selection of bars, pubs, and places to enjoy an evening out.

Dining is another of Nerja’s main attractions. The town boasts an impressive variety of restaurants serving everything from traditional Spanish dishes to international cuisine. The historic old town has the greatest concentration of eateries, with restaurants lining its picturesque streets, while the area around Burriana Beach also offers plenty of excellent dining options.

For a more authentic local experience, many people choose to visit one of Nerja’s numerous tapas bars. Sharing tapas or larger raciones is a favourite way for Spaniards to dine, particularly during the warmer months. These lively venues are popular gathering spots where friends and families meet for drinks and small plates before continuing their evening. Most tapas bars open in the afternoon and stay busy until around midnight.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxed drink, live music, or a vibrant social atmosphere, Nerja has something to suit every age group. The town’s nightlife is centred around Tutti Frutti Square and Calle Antonio Millón, although you’ll also find plenty of welcoming bars and entertainment venues throughout the town center.

Located just 13 kilometres from Málaga, Torremolinos has transformed from a traditional fishing village into one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular holiday destinations. Known for its beautiful beaches, year-round pleasant climate, excellent cuisine, and vibrant nightlife, the town is home to more than 68,000 residents, including around 15,000 foreign nationals who have chosen to settle there.

The 1950s marked a turning point in Torremolinos’ history, as it emerged as a leading tourist destination on the Costa del Sol. Its open-minded and cosmopolitan atmosphere attracted visitors from around the world, including artists, intellectuals, and members of the international jet set. During this period, the city became closely associated with the cultural phenomenon known as the “movida malagueña.” Today, Torremolinos continues to enjoy a reputation for lively nightlife, with numerous beach bars and clubs that stay active until sunrise, particularly during the summer months.

At the heart of the town lies Calle San Miguel, a bustling pedestrian street filled with shops and cafés. The avenue leads directly to the seafront promenade and Playa del Bajondillo. Along the way, visitors can see the historic Torre de Pimentel, originally built in the 14th century as a defensive watchtower overlooking the coast. From this strategic location, guards of the Kingdom of Granada monitored the shoreline for potential attacks arriving by sea.

Torremolinos is widely regarded as having some of the finest beaches in the Málaga area, thanks to their extensive stretches of sand and excellent facilities. Among the most famous is Playa del Bajondillo, situated between the districts of Playamar and La Carihuela. Measuring approximately 40 metres in width and over one kilometre in length, it is especially popular due to its proximity to the town centre and easy accessibility.

Another standout beach is La Carihuela Beach, which extends for about 2.1 kilometres and is also around 40 metres wide. Often considered one of Málaga’s best urban beaches, it is renowned for its clear waters and fine sand. Once home to a thriving fishing community, the area now attracts visitors with its seafront restaurants and beach bars, where local specialties such as fried fish, gazpacho, and other Andalusian dishes are served. The lively promenade is also a major draw, offering a mix of shops, restaurants, and nightlife venues along the waterfront.

Torremolinos is located just 7 kilometers from the city of Málaga and right next to the attractive neighboring resort town of Benalmádena.

The town of Torremolinos has a happy, quirky, fun atmosphere and appeals to both young and old visitors. There are an abundance of shops and boutiques, and the best place to head is the main pedestrianised street of Calle San Miguel, where shops line up to sell you goods of all kinds.

It is also filled with color in the summer season, with over a thousand species of trees and flowers being planted in and around the towns streets, plazas and parks.

The old fishing district of El Bajondillo is found at the end of Calle San Miguel, at the bottom of a steep flight of stairs, here you will find some excellent seafood restaurants, souvenir shops and at the bottom is the beach of El Bajondillo.

The seafront promenade of Torremolinos stretches all the way to Benalmádena Marina and makes for a pleasant evening stroll, where you pass the old fishing village of La Carihuela.

Málaga, located in the charming autonomous region of Andalucía, is the capital of the province of the same name. Originally founded by the Phoenicians as Malaka, its name is derived from the Phoenician word Mālk, which translates as “salt”. Throughout its history, Málaga has been under the dominion of various civilizations, including the Roman and the Muslim, reinventing and shaping its personality in each period. For centuries, its strategic port has been a key gateway to the Mediterranean.

Located in southern Spain and on the renowned Costa del Sol, Málaga has established itself as one of the most desired tourist destinations in Spain. Beyond its golden beaches and its paradisiacal coves, the city is renowned for being the Costa del Golf and also boasts, a rich historical heritage. Testimony to this is the majestic Alcazaba, a Muslim palace–fortress that stands in the centre of the city, recounting the tales of the ancient civilisations that once inhabited it.

Furthermore, Málaga wears its party clothes as it celebrates its traditional fairs and festivals, offering a vibrant nightlife that delights Malagueños and visitors alike. Although tourism is a fundamental pillar of its economy, Málaga also shines in the industrial and commercial fields. Its port is not only an economic driver, but also a point of connection with other Mediterranean destinations, reaffirming its importance in Andalusia and throughout Spain.

Málaga enjoys a Mediterranean climate with coastal influences, marked by moderate winter seasons and sunny and mild summers. Average temperatures during winter vary between 13°C and 20°C, and in the summer season, they usually range from 25°C to 30°C, although at specific times they may exceed these figures. Although not very abundant, rains are most frequent in the autumn and spring months, with summer being the driest time of the year.

Torremolinos is located on the Costa del Sol, on the western shore of the bay of Málaga and behind the Sierra de Mijas. It is located at an altitude of 49 meters and 13 kilometers from the center of Málaga, the provincial capital.

In the 1950s, Torremolinos was a small fishing village that became one of the main tourist destinations for sun and beach in Spain, the first in Andalucía and on the Costa del Sol. The influx of foreigners, intellectuals, hippies, bohemians, aristocrats, artists, famous personalities and tourists in general during the 1960s and 1970s created a free and easy, permissive and cosmopolitan atmosphere that made it stand out from other areas of the Costa del Sol.

The town’s busy nightlife is prominent in the area. It is gay-friendly and has very accepting and uninhibited atmosphere.

The Spanish city of Málaga is a Mediterranean seaport on the Costa del Sol in the Andalucía region of southern Spain. It is the 2nd most populous city in Andalucía, the 6th in Spain and more importantly, a significant tourist destination. This beautiful city is also famous for rich architectural history, Mediterranean cuisine, local wines and sandy beaches.

Declared as one of the oldest cities in the world, the city of Málaga enjoys a rich traditional and cultural heritage. The city was founded in 770 BC by the Phoenicians, and has seen numerous civilizations such as Arabic, Roman, Christian, etc.

The magnificent city of Málaga is a world apart in itself. The culturally rich coastal city in the autonomous community of Andalucia was once described by the poet Vicente Aleixandre as ‘a paradise between the sky and the earth.’

Málaga truly is a sunlit paradise with miles and miles of enchanting shoreline, mesmerizing scenery, and pristine beaches. The region enjoys a mild climate throughout the year as it is snuggled between the two river valleys (Guadalhorce and Guadalmina) and is surrounded by the mighty mountains, thanks to its geographical location. It has numerous parks, exciting landmarks and plenty of places for sightseeing which makes it an ideal place to spend a family vacation.

The city has presented several distinguished people like, painter Pablo Picasso, Andalusian poet Solomon Ibn Gabirol and Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas.
