MALAGA Spain EASTER PARADE 2024 – SEMANA SANTA Processions | Costa Del Sol, ANDALUSIA [4K]

malaga – spain – easter 2024 – SEMANA SANTA – costa del sol – andalusia

The Málaga Easter Festival is a prominent religious, social, and cultural gathering held every year in the city of Málaga. Processional marches occur from Palm Sunday to Good Friday, with Holy Saturday serving as the interim period until Easter Sunday. From Lent until Passion Saturday, five Brotherhoods, along with various associations and parish organizations, partake in the processions. It gained recognition as an International Tourist Attraction on February 16, 1980.

In Málaga, the revered icons are transported on elaborate platforms referred to as “thrones,” distinguishing them significantly from those found in other Spanish locales. These thrones are renowned for their substantial size and cultural significance. Unlike elsewhere, where “pasos” are conveyed by carriers beneath a wooden beam, in Málaga, the responsibility falls on “men of the throne” who support the weight by resting their shoulders beneath long metal or wooden bars extending from the structure. Additionally, these thrones tend to surpass pasos in size.

Like in other urban centers, Málaga’s processions typically feature a pair of thrones (depicting Christ and the Virgin), escorted by penitents (nazarenos) carrying candles or other paraphernalia like rule books or lanterns, alongside “promesas” who have pledged penance for favors, walking behind the band. An exceptional trait in Málaga is the accompaniment provided by military and security units to the venerated Sacred Images, encompassing units such as the Parachute Brigade, the Legion, the Navy, the Regulars, the Marines, the Local Police, or the Civil Guard.

Apart from the penitential march, the brotherhoods and sisterhoods engage in additional endeavors centered on their three core principles: education, devotion, and philanthropy. These encompass a range of charitable initiatives like supporting soup kitchens, contributing food, or caring for the elderly and infirm. Internal religious practices occur year-round, comprising novenas, quinquennials, and triduums, often involving the presentation of sacred images to infants or youngsters, alongside the distribution of medals featuring the organization’s emblem.

There is a Consortium of Brotherhoods, established in 1921, wherein members are chosen quadrennially by the leaders of various brotherhoods and sisterhoods. This autonomous body, free from governmental influence, oversees the coordination of Holy Week activities and streamlines negotiations and arrangements with official bodies concerning the designated route.

Málaga is a city and municipality of Spain, located in Andalucía, in the south of the country. An important tourist destination, Málaga is also known as “the capital of the Costa del Sol,” with an estimated 6 million tourists visiting the city every year.

It is the sixth most populous city in Spain, the second in Andalucía and the forty-sixth in the European Union. It is also the largest and most populous coastal city in southern Spain.

Due to the fact that the city presents a wide overlap of traces of the passage of civilizations throughtout the centuries, both from the East and from the West in such a small urban space, Málaga has been declared a Historic Site. Remains from the eras of Phoenicians, Punics, Arabs, Romans, and etc., turn the city center into an authentic historical “palimpsest” in a way monuments such as the Roman Theater, the Cathedral, the Alcazaba, the Customs House, the Jewish Quaters and the rich underground archeological heritage coexist.

The Calle Larios offers a mixture of well-known chain stores and boutiques for shopping, and cafetería’s and ice cream parlors as well. Through its streets you can find more shops and restaurants and bars.

Málaga cuisine is a collection of all the gastronomy of the province and is part of the Mediterranean diet. The grilled sardines or “espetos,” the anchovies or “boquerones”, both pickled and fried, and the fried fish or “pescaíto frito” made with anchovies, mackerel, mullet, octopus or squid, are the mosst typical dishes but also include noodle casserole or “cazuela de fideos,” the gazpacho, the gazpachuelo, the migas, the Málaga salad, the ajoblanco, and the porra antequerana, among others. Málaga is also known for its sweet wines that have been produces since ancient times. Rum and brandy from Málaga are also traditional.

Málaga is set along the sparkling coastline of the Costa del Sol and embodies youthful vigour in a city that has transformed itself. A port city that epitomises the Andalusian lifestyle, Málaga is best known for its most famous son – artist and sculpture Pablo Picasso. Dressed in golden beaches and an inviting Old Town, Málaga is loaded with history.

Explore charming laneways and energetic plazas in the city’s historical centre and sample the full-bodied flavours of Andalusian cuisine in the many bars and restaurants throughout. Art buffs will be thrilled with the museums and galleries in Malaga, while those looking to rekindle a passion for natural landscapes will find a contrast of gardens and rocky canyons to delve into.

The design of the Catedral de la Encarnación de Málaga comprises an intriguing blend of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles, built on the ruins of the former mosque of Aljama. Málaga’s historical centrepiece is more than 250 years old and, despite construction spanning the mid-16th-century to the late 18th-century, it was never fully completed due to a lack of funds. Even so, it still remains one of the most impressive cathedrals in the region.

Plaza de la Merced is a handsome square in the Old Town of Málaga. Flanked by sun-trapped cafés and airy spaces, you can explore the popular plaza and admire the neo-classical obelisk in the centre of the 19th-century square. Continue making your way to the north corner to the house where famous artist Pablo Picasso was born in 1881.

The well-preserved Alcazaba de Málaga dates back to the 11th-century Moorish period and is set among lush greenery of towering palms and orange groves. Built upon the ruins of a former Roman bastion on the hillside of the mount of Gibralfaro, the site once had 110 main towers with a series of smaller columns peppered throughout.

A feast for the senses, Atarazanas Market is an absolute foodie’s delight. Bountiful with fresh produce from fruit and vegetables, fish and meat to ready-to-eat freshly prepared tapas and meals, there’s no shortage of choice.

Calle Marqués de Larios in Málaga’s Old Town is one of the best places to fill your shopping bags. The beautiful, pedestrianised, marble-lined street dressed with swanky stores was once considered one of the most elegant streets in Spain. Torremolinos Spain Town Walk Costa del Sol Malaga February 2024 [4K]

Torremolinos is a municipality in the province of Malaga that in recent years has become one of the preferred locations on the Costa del Sol. Apart from enjoying the sea and the sand, travelers have the opportunity to visit the fishing district of “La Carihuela” and taste its local cuisine, which includes fried fish, the most famous dish in the region, in hundreds of restaurants and bars.

Marbella Spain Fantastic City March 2024 Update Costa del Sol | Málaga [4K]

Marbella is a place that consistently draws admiring glances from other resorts. It is a town that can be ultra-exclusive for the rich and famous while also affording the Average Joe and Joanna their chance to hob-nob with the elite in a way that just couldn’t happen in Monte Carlo or St. Tropez.

Forget the international reputation for glitz and glamour – for now at least – and enjoy the town as it was meant to be enjoyed. The warm sunshine on the Costa del Sol acts as both orchestrator and timekeeper, beckoning children into the water, dictating restaurants’ opening hours and al fresco settings, and generally deciding on the mood of the inhabitants. Invariably, this mood is one of contented relaxation, particularly on the beach or in the cool of Alameda Park.

There are shops, bars and clubs aplenty, but Marbella was and still is a very Spanish town, albeit one with a tangible and complementary international edge. Locals, expats and tourists co-exist alongside one another in the most harmonious way, with seemingly nowhere off limits for anybody, and a warm welcome awaiting all.

Between the months of June and September, Marbella in the daytime can be split into two distinct entities: the beach and the Old Town. The in-between areas – while pleasant – offer few opportunities to shade from the sun and cool off. Sure, the serene and sophisticated stores and boutiques that line the main commercial thoroughfare that is Ricardo Soriano provide welcome, air-conditioned relief from the heat, but you can’t stay in there all day, partly because many close during siesta hours and also because they tend to be designer, bespoke and gloriously out of many people’s price range. Thankfully, the same cannot be said for Marbella’s numerous bars, cafés and restaurants.

There are plenty dotted along the promenade, ranging from classy seafood joints to cheap and cheerful expat bars and your more traditional tapas establishments. All are invariably well-priced and deliver fantastically fresh food for all the family.

Alternatively, the Old Town’s tight narrow streets harbour a fair smattering of delightful establishments just waiting to be discovered. While you will likely pay more here, the setting makes it worthwhile. It is here, too, that much of Marbella’s splendid “feria” takes place each June.

Benalmadena is one of the most interesting areas on Costa del Sol. It has plenty of green areas, space, tourist attractions and the most beautiful sports harbour on the coast. It is divided into three urban areas: Benalmádena Pueblo, Arroyo de la Miel, Benalmádena Costa. The most worth visiting of these is Benalmádena Costa with its long stretch of sunny beaches, a lively nightlife and excellent cuisine.

Zapraszam do oglądania!
