Torremolinos lies on the Costa del Sol, along the western edge of Málaga’s bay, with the Sierra de Mijas rising behind it. The town sits about 49 meters above sea level and is roughly 13 kilometers from Málaga city center, the provincial capital.
Back in the 1950s, it was just a quiet fishing village. However, it quickly grew into one of Spain’s leading sun-and-beach tourist destinations—becoming the first major hotspot of its kind in Andalucía and along the Costa del Sol. During the 1960s and 1970s, an influx of international visitors, including intellectuals, artists, bohemians, aristocrats, and celebrities, helped shape a relaxed, open-minded, and cosmopolitan vibe that set it apart from other nearby resorts.
Today, Torremolinos is especially known for its lively nightlife. It is also widely recognized as an LGBTQ+-friendly destination, with a welcoming and uninhibited atmosphere.

Benalmádena is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Costa del Sol, attracting visitors with its wide range of leisure, entertainment and family-friendly attractions. The municipality is home to amusement parks, a casino, the Benalmádena Cable Car, aquarium attractions and Benalmádena Marina, one of the largest and most recognisable marinas in Andalucía. With its combination of coastal scenery, entertainment and holiday facilities, Benalmádena offers plenty of things to see and do for visitors of all ages.
The growth of Benalmádena tourism began during the 1950s, when mass tourism started transforming Spain’s Mediterranean coastline. This period marked the beginning of Benalmádena’s transformation from a quieter coastal municipality into the popular holiday destination it is today.

It is also where you’ll find the famous Benalmádena Marina, a major attraction known for its waterfront setting and lively atmosphere.
A broad Benalmádena promenade runs along the coast, connecting different parts of the municipality and providing an enjoyable route for walking, cycling and taking in views of the Mediterranean. With its beaches, marina, restaurants, attractions and lively holiday atmosphere, Benalmádena Costa is an excellent base for exploring the Costa del Sol.

La Cala de Mijas is located in the coastal area of the municipality of Mijas, except for some rocky areas between the limits of Fuengirola, to the east, and Marbella, to the west. La Cala de Mijas is a small population center of less than a kilometer in length. This place delivers a mix of expat-haven, authentic Spain, affordability and affluence.
The town is mainly dedicated to sun and beach and residential tourism. It also offers some municipal services such as health centers, schools, cultural centers and library. There are plenty of good restaurants, shops and beach-front bars as well in the area.
La Cala de Mijas enjoys a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and warm winters. Cooling breezes from the sea make the summer here manageable, with temperature average of 32 degrees during the summer.

Benalmádena is a town located between Fuengirola and Torremolinos, with lots of great beaches and a wide variety of services and accommodation for the tourists. Benalmádena Costa is home to the majority of the area’s attractions most importantly the golden sandy beaches. Many restaurants and bars serving food from all over the world are present in the area. Chiringuitos or local seafood restaurants on the beach are famous in the area. The friendly, relaxed and chill atmosphere all year makes it one of the most beloved destinations for families.
Benalmádena indeed has everything like top-quality beaches, the modern and outstanding Puerto Marina, a Casino located in Torrequebrada, several golf courses, amusement parks such as Tivoli World and Holiday World Beach Club, and plenty of attractions like Sea Life, Parque de la Paloma, and Butterfly Garden making sure that all visitors have an unforgettable experience during their stay.
At the Benalmádena beach you can visit the Castle El Bil-Bil, an Arabic style building, which is adorned with fountains and is decorated according to Nazari tradition. Another building of great interest in Benalmádena is the Castle of Colomares, dedicated to the discovery of America. This construction creates a grand visual impact by combining all architectural styles.

Founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC, Málaga is one of the oldest cities in Europe, offering visitors a unique journey through more than 2,800 years of history. From its early days as a federated municipality to its time as a Roman city under Latin law, and later as a flourishing Andalusian medina, Málaga has played a key role in Mediterranean civilization. This dynamic era earned it the honorary titles Siempre Denodada (“Always Bold”) and La Primera en el Peligro de la Libertad (“The First in Danger for Freedom”). Later, during the 1960s and 1970s, the city was at the heart of Spain’s tourism boom, evolving into a lively Mediterranean destination and today standing as a major center for culture, business, entertainment, and transport.
Declared a Historic Site, Málaga’s old town is a living museum where Phoenician, Punic, Roman, and Arab heritage come together. Visitors can explore iconic landmarks such as the Roman Theatre, the Alcazaba fortress, and the Cathedral, as well as discover archaeological treasures hidden throughout the city.
Today, Málaga is one of Spain’s top travel destinations and the vibrant “Capital of the Costa del Sol.” Welcoming around six million visitors each year, the city attracts travelers with its rich cultural offerings, including the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the Museo Picasso Málaga, the Carmen Thyssen Museum, its atmospheric historic center, and its sun-soaked Mediterranean beaches.

The municipal area of Fuengirola is one of the smallest in the province of Málaga, consisting merely of the coastal strip occupied by the town and the Santa Fe de Los Boliches district, which make up seven kilometers of excellent beaches.
Although it may have a Phoenician origin, the town’s history begins in the Arabic times with the construction of Sohail Castle for defense purposes, part of whose walls still remain until today. The town center still retains a certain traditional air, albeit it is today characterized by the hotels, apartments, restaurants, etc needed to its main source of income which is the sun and sand tourism.
Fuengirola was inhabited by the bástulos, the Phoenicians, and then later the Carthaginians. The Romans called it Suel, and the Arabs Sohail, the name of a star in which according to Ibn-Jallicam, could only be seen in the peninsula from this spot.
In the year 912, Abderraman III ordered the building of a fortress on the small hill that stands between the coastline and the mouth of the River Sohail; the remains of this said castle, though in a state of extreme disrepair, still form an important feature in the landscape of the coast of Fuengirola. It was then used for military purposes and to monitor the coast until the 19th century, playing a major part in the War of Independence.
On the 7th of August 1487, Fuengirola was captured by the Catholic Monarchs.
In the 17th century, the town acquired its present-day denomination which appears to be derived form the name by which it was referred to by the Genoese sailors who came to the shores and used dragnets, which they called “gironas.”

Join us on this stunning walking tour from Torremolinos to Benalmadena, in the province of Malaga, on the beautiful Costa del Sol in Andalucia (Spain). After yesterday’s yellow weather warning for rain and wind, today the streets are once again enjoying the region’s typical good weather, with a splendid clear and sunny day that brings people back outside to enjoy the atmosphere.
We begin our walk in La Nogalera Square, next to the train station, then make our way through San Miguel Street and down Cuesta del Tajo to reach the El Bajondillo promenade. From there, we continue along the seafront without turning off, heading toward Puerto Marina and passing through the promenade of La Carihuela. We then walk along the entire Benalmadena seafront promenade, passing by the iconic Bil-Bil Castle.

A product of the tourist boom in the 1960s, Torremolinos began as a small fishing village to a large, densely-populated town dedicated entirely to sun and sand tourism. Torremolinos showcases large beaches with various related facilities and services.
The famous Pimentel Tower is the town’s most significant monument and serves as an icon, with some traces of the past still visible around the areas of La Carihuela and Bajondillo districts.
The origins and name of the town derive from a watchtower (torre) and the mills (molinos) built there to grind wheat, positioned perpendicularly to the ocean in order to harness the hydraulic power generated by the water flowing into it.
During the second half of the 20th century, Torremolinos has changed significantly with regards to the population’s lifestyle and economic activities when the progressive development of tourism that had begun which created a transformation that turned the town into one of today’s best-known holiday resorts.
