Málaga is a municipality of Spain, capital of the Province of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalucía. It is the second most populous city in Andalucía next to Sevilla, and the sixth in Spain.

Founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century B.C. Málaga is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It was a first federated municipality, and then under the Latin law of the Roman Empire and a prosperous Andalusian medina four times the capital of its own kingdom, which was incorporated into the Crown of Castile in the year 1487. During the 19th century, Málaga experienced an incredible industrial and revolutionary activity that made it ranked as the fisrt industrial city in Spain and made her worthy of the titles “Siempre denodada” (Always bold) and “La primera en el peligro de la libertad” (The first in danger of freedom). It is the rotagonist in the explosion of the tourist boom of the 1960s and 1970s, it is currently an outstanding entertainment, economic, cultural and communications hub on the Mediterranean coast.

Málaga has been declared a Historic Site due to the set of historical elements found in the same city: Phoenicians, Punics, Romans and Arabs are concentrated in the historic center of the city – Roman Theater, the Alcazaba, the Cathedral, among many other cutural elements found both outdoors and underground.

The city is an important tourist destination, dubbed as “the capital of the Costa del Sol.” An estimate of 6 million tourists visit the city each year. Tourists usually visit the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and the Museo Picasso Málaga, the Carmen Thyssen Museum, the old town and the beaches to name a few. The harbour of Málaga is also the second busiest cruise port of the Iberian Peninsula.

When it comes to gastronomy, the cuisine of Málaga and the wider Costa del Sol is known for its espetos, fish (usually sardines) grilled over open fires in the chiringuitos or beach bars located near the beaches. The espeto has been proposed as a candidate for designation by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.

Marbella Spain Beautiful City Update March 2023 Costa del Sol | Málaga [4K]

Marbella is a place that consistently draws admiring glances from other resorts. It is a town that can be ultra-exclusive for the rich and famous while also affording the Average Joe and Joanna their chance to hob-nob with the elite in a way that just couldn’t happen in Monte Carlo or St. Tropez.

Marbella is fresh yet classy, laidback yet open-all-hours, and easily accessible yet a world away from the often dreary grey of northern European climes. In short, Marbella is a fascinating enigma.

One of the most glorious ways to experience Marbella is to take an early morning or late evening stroll along its delightful Paseo Marítimo: a sweeping stretch of promenade that takes in the entire length of the main town area; where palm trees guard beautiful terracotta villas, lavish hotels elegantly creep towards the beach (only imposing in the most discreet manner), and people of all ages stroll, run, skate, cycle and chatter as charming cafés, traditional tapas bars and chilled-out chiringuitos serve all manner of delights for the hungry and thirsty.

Forget the international reputation for glitz and glamour – for now at least – and enjoy the town as it was meant to be enjoyed. The warm sunshine on the Costa del Sol acts as both orchestrator and timekeeper, beckoning children into the water, dictating restaurants’ opening hours and al fresco settings, and generally deciding on the mood of the inhabitants. Invariably, this mood is one of contented relaxation, particularly on the beach or in the cool of Alameda Park.

There are shops, bars and clubs aplenty, but Marbella was and still is a very Spanish town, albeit one with a tangible and complementary international edge. Locals, expats and tourists co-exist alongside one another in the most harmonious way, with seemingly nowhere off limits for anybody, and a warm welcome awaiting all.

There are plenty dotted along the promenade, ranging from classy seafood joints to cheap and cheerful expat bars and your more traditional tapas establishments. All are invariably well-priced and deliver fantastically fresh food for all the family.

Alternatively, the Old Town’s tight narrow streets harbour a fair smattering of delightful establishments just waiting to be discovered. While you will likely pay more here, the setting makes it worthwhile. It is here, too, that much of Marbella’s splendid “feria” takes place each June.

Malaga City Spain Beautiful City and People Update March 2023 Costa del Sol | Andalucía [4K]

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Málaga has remained unspoilt, largely untouched by mass tourism despite its bustling airport and rarely explored by sun-seeking visitors – despite the city itself being home to vast stretches of sandy beaches. These beaches share the soft sand and gentle Mediterranean surf of those found in Torremolinos, Marbella or Fuengirola, but what lies in front is more traditionally Spanish.

Málaga dots its paseo marítimo with several traditional chiringuitos, tapas bars and seafood restaurants; so, if this is your thing, visit, relax and enjoy the beach in the same manner as a local would.

The city’s location in south-western Spain ensures its weather is pleasantly warm all year round. In summer it gets hot, but not uncomfortably so like Sevilla and Córdoba, while winters are rarely cold.

The lengthy promenade throbs with activity throughout the year, attracting Málaga residents of all ages: black-clad older folk amble along, stopping intermittently to enjoy the horizon from the comfort of a shaded bench; fitness enthusiasts cycle, jog or roller-blade past, weaving in and out of the skateboarding or moped-riding teens that frequent the area in a refreshingly non-threatening manner.

Much of Málaga is also characterised by gleaming contemporary buildings, the bus station connects the city with much of the rest of Spain, and every department store, supermarket, pharmacy and medical facility can be found here – all impressively modern, efficiently-run and easily accessible.

In the stunning old town area of the city, Málaga’s rich history comes to life in the form of many intriguing and often spectacular sights. The excellent Picasso Museum (Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga) is one of the finest of its kind in Europe, while the majesty of the Alcazaba and the 14th century Gibralfaro Castle hints at a history defined by battle and glory. The beautifully baroque cathedral is flanked by fragrant gardens, a pretty café-lined square and the ever-present horse-drawn carriage stations.

The atmosphere in Málaga’s tightly woven cobbled streets – particularly during the hot summer months – is intoxicating, almost Bohemian, particularly in the vibrant Plaza de la Constitución and Soho district, while the boutiques and technology stores that populate the chic Calle Larios offer a glimpse of a city that has come to terms with its unique position at the heart of southern Spain’s premier tourist destination.

Malaga City Spain Truly Beautiful City Update April 2023 Costa del Sol | Andalucía [4K]

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Málaga is a city and municipality of Spain, located in Andalucía, in the south of the country. An important tourist destination, Málaga is also known as “the capital of the Costa del Sol,” with an estimated 6 million tourists visiting the city every year.

It is the sixth most populous city in Spain, the second in Andalucía and the forty-sixth in the European Union. It is also the largest and most populous coastal city in southern Spain.

Due to the fact that the city presents a wide overlap of traces of the passage of civilizations throughtout the centuries, both from the East and from the West in such a small urban space, Málaga has been declared a Historic Site. Remains from the eras of Phoenicians, Punics, Arabs, Romans, and etc., turn the city center into an authentic historical “palimpsest” in a way monuments such as the Roman Theater, the Cathedral, the Alcazaba, the Customs House, the Jewish Quaters and the rich underground archeological heritage coexist.

The Calle Larios offers a mixture of well-known chain stores and boutiques for shopping, and cafetería’s and ice cream parlors as well. Through its streets you can find more shops and restaurants and bars.

Málaga cuisine is a collection of all the gastronomy of the province and is part of the Mediterranean diet. The grilled sardines or “espetos,” the anchovies or “boquerones”, both pickled and fried, and the fried fish or “pescaíto frito” made with anchovies, mackerel, mullet, octopus or squid, are the mosst typical dishes but also include noodle casserole or “cazuela de fideos,” the gazpacho, the gazpachuelo, the migas, the Málaga salad, the ajoblanco, and the porra antequerana, among others. Málaga is also known for its sweet wines that have been produces since ancient times. Rum and brandy from Málaga are also traditional.
