Spain Cost of Living 2026: Our Real Monthly Budget in Málaga

How much does it actually cost to live in Málaga, Spain in 2026?

In this video, I break down our real monthly cost of living after one year of living in Málaga as a couple. We live in a small one-bedroom apartment in the historic center, about a 20-minute walk from the beach. We don’t own a car, we don’t pay for a gym membership, we cook most of our meals at home, and we usually go out once or twice a week.

This is not the cheapest possible way to live in Málaga, and it’s definitely not the luxury version either. It’s just our real budget as two people living pretty simply in the city center.

I cover our actual expenses, including rent, groceries, eating out, electricity, water, phone, internet, health insurance, transportation, household items, and the smaller costs that add up over the month.

Our rent is €950/month, our fixed monthly costs are around €1,120, and after tracking one full week of spending, I estimate that our normal monthly cost as a couple living in Málaga is around €1,700–€1,900/month.

A very disciplined month could be closer to €1,600–€1,750, while a more social or comfortable month could easily reach €2,000–€2,300, especially if you eat out more, travel, have visitors, or run into random life expenses.

So if you’re thinking about moving to Málaga, Spain, spending a few months here, becoming a digital nomad in southern Spain, or just trying to understand the real cost of living here, hopefully this gives you a more grounded idea of what daily life can actually cost.

This is not financial advice. It’s just one real example from our life after one year in Málaga.

Founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC, Málaga is one of the oldest cities in Europe, offering visitors a unique journey through more than 2,800 years of history. From its early days as a federated municipality to its time as a Roman city under Latin law, and later as a flourishing Andalusian medina, Málaga has played a key role in Mediterranean civilization. It even served as the capital of its own kingdom on four occasions before becoming part of the Crown of Castile in 1487.

In the 19th century, Málaga became Spain’s leading industrial city, experiencing rapid growth and strong revolutionary activity. This dynamic era earned it the honorary titles Siempre Denodada (“Always Bold”) and La Primera en el Peligro de la Libertad (“The First in Danger for Freedom”). Later, during the 1960s and 1970s, the city was at the heart of Spain’s tourism boom, evolving into a lively Mediterranean destination and today standing as a major center for culture, business, entertainment, and transport.

Declared a Historic Site, Málaga’s old town is a living museum where Phoenician, Punic, Roman, and Arab heritage come together. Visitors can explore iconic landmarks such as the Roman Theatre, the Alcazaba fortress, and the Cathedral, as well as discover archaeological treasures hidden throughout the city.

Today, Málaga is one of Spain’s top travel destinations and the vibrant “Capital of the Costa del Sol.” Welcoming around six million visitors each year, the city attracts travelers with its rich cultural offerings, including the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the Museo Picasso Málaga, the Carmen Thyssen Museum, its atmospheric historic center, and its sun-soaked Mediterranean beaches.

The municipal area of Fuengirola is one of the smallest in the province of Málaga, consisting merely of the coastal strip occupied by the town and the Santa Fe de Los Boliches district, which make up seven kilometers of excellent beaches.

Although it may have a Phoenician origin, the town’s history begins in the Arabic times with the construction of Sohail Castle for defense purposes, part of whose walls still remain until today. The town center still retains a certain traditional air, albeit it is today characterized by the hotels, apartments, restaurants, etc needed to its main source of income which is the sun and sand tourism.

Fuengirola was inhabited by the bástulos, the Phoenicians, and then later the Carthaginians. The Romans called it Suel, and the Arabs Sohail, the name of a star in which according to Ibn-Jallicam, could only be seen in the peninsula from this spot.

In the year 912, Abderraman III ordered the building of a fortress on the small hill that stands between the coastline and the mouth of the River Sohail; the remains of this said castle, though in a state of extreme disrepair, still form an important feature in the landscape of the coast of Fuengirola. It was then used for military purposes and to monitor the coast until the 19th century, playing a major part in the War of Independence.

On the 7th of August 1487, Fuengirola was captured by the Catholic Monarchs.

In the 17th century, the town acquired its present-day denomination which appears to be derived form the name by which it was referred to by the Genoese sailors who came to the shores and used dragnets, which they called “gironas.”

🚶‍♂️Torremolinos 🇪🇸 Walking video | La Carihuela Promenade relaxing walk in July 2026 ☀️

🚶 Walking Routes – Explore Torremolinos step by step in July 2026
Join me for a relaxing walk along the La Carihuela promenade in Torremolinos, one of the most popular stretches of seafront on the Costa del Sol. Known for its traditional charm, sandy beaches, and famous seafood restaurants, La Carihuela offers a slightly more laid-back feel while still being close to the lively areas nearby.
July is a great time to visit the Costa del Sol, with daytime temperatures typically around 28 to 36 degrees, plenty of sunshine, and a relaxed atmosphere as the resorts begin to come to life ahead of the summer season, while still being far less crowded than the peak months.

The promenade is flat, well-maintained, and easy to follow, linking La Carihuela with neighbouring areas like Bajondillo and on towards Benalmádena Marina. Whether you’re planning a holiday or just want to see what the area looks like, this walk gives you a real feel for one of Torremolinos’ most loved coastal areas.

The Mediterranean resort town of Torremolinos in southern Spain’s Costa del Sol region is a sunseeker’s haven. In the 1950s, this former fishing village became one of the most popular destinations for sun-loving tourists. Stretches of dark, sandy beaches offer a multitude of watersports and beach activities, while the many bars, restaurants and local sights occupy holidaymakers.

Boasting an enviable mix of green spaces, cultural sights and coastal views, Torremolinos is an ideal destination for your next summer holiday. More than just warm Mediterranean coastline, the resort region has a rich blend of family activities as well as a beating nightlife for young travellers.

Torremolinos, just south of the central city of Malaga, has many amazing seafood restaurants and hotels along the waterfront La Carihuela village. The pedestrian-only Calle San Miguel is a bustling shopping district that leads directly to Playa Bajondillo.

Discover the bustling centre of Torremolinos Old Town that stretches from the seafront promenade. Starting along the section known as Paseo Maritimo del Bajondillo, make your way in toward the oldest section of the town to stroll along the pedestrianised Calle San Miguel. It’s lined with restaurants and bars, as well as shops ranging from jewellers and fashion boutiques to souvenir stores and delicatessens.

As you meander the streets, you’ll also cross paths with Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, an 18th-century Andalusian neoclassical-style church in a small square at the end of Calle San Miguel. Another historical point of interest is the only remaining trace of Torre de Pimentel (Tower of the Mills), which dates back to the 1300s.

Torremolinos was the first resort to be established on the Costa del Sol and remains one of the area’s most popular seaside destinations. Its coastline stretches for almost 8 km (5 miles), with a lively, fully illuminated promenade featuring dedicated cycling and skating lanes. Visitors will find an abundance of beach bars and traditional chiringuitos serving food and drinks along the shore. At the eastern end, Los Álamos offers a quieter, more laid-back setting throughout the year, while in summer it becomes a hub for watersports, including windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Situated between La Carihuela and Playamar, El Bajondillo is a broad urban beach measuring around 40 metres wide and 1 kilometre long. Located in the heart of Torremolinos, it is one of the town’s busiest and most popular beaches thanks to its excellent facilities and convenient location. The beachfront restaurants are especially known for serving fresh local seafood, with daily catches featured on many menus, making it an enjoyable destination in every season.

Along the promenade and beachfront, visitors can hire a wide range of equipment, including bicycles, mopeds, electric scooters, jet skis, surfboards, paddleboards, sailing boats, waterskis, snorkelling gear, and parasailing equipment, offering plenty of ways to enjoy the Mediterranean.

A product of the tourist boom in the 1960s, Torremolinos began as a small fishing village to a large, densely-populated town dedicated entirely to sun and sand tourism. Torremolinos showcases large beaches with various related facilities and services.

The famous Pimentel Tower is the town’s most significant monument and serves as an icon, with some traces of the past still visible around the areas of La Carihuela and Bajondillo districts.

The origins and name of the town derive from a watchtower (torre) and the mills (molinos) built there to grind wheat, positioned perpendicularly to the ocean in order to harness the hydraulic power generated by the water flowing into it.

During the second half of the 20th century, Torremolinos has changed significantly with regards to the population’s lifestyle and economic activities when the progressive development of tourism that had begun which created a transformation that turned the town into one of today’s best-known holiday resorts.
