Located just 13 kilometres from Málaga, Torremolinos has transformed from a traditional fishing village into one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular holiday destinations. Known for its beautiful beaches, year-round pleasant climate, excellent cuisine, and vibrant nightlife, the town is home to more than 68,000 residents, including around 15,000 foreign nationals who have chosen to settle there.
The 1950s marked a turning point in Torremolinos’ history, as it emerged as a leading tourist destination on the Costa del Sol. Its open-minded and cosmopolitan atmosphere attracted visitors from around the world, including artists, intellectuals, and members of the international jet set. During this period, the city became closely associated with the cultural phenomenon known as the “movida malagueña.” Today, Torremolinos continues to enjoy a reputation for lively nightlife, with numerous beach bars and clubs that stay active until sunrise, particularly during the summer months.
At the heart of the town lies Calle San Miguel, a bustling pedestrian street filled with shops and cafés. The avenue leads directly to the seafront promenade and Playa del Bajondillo. Along the way, visitors can see the historic Torre de Pimentel, originally built in the 14th century as a defensive watchtower overlooking the coast. From this strategic location, guards of the Kingdom of Granada monitored the shoreline for potential attacks arriving by sea.
Torremolinos is widely regarded as having some of the finest beaches in the Málaga area, thanks to their extensive stretches of sand and excellent facilities. Among the most famous is Playa del Bajondillo, situated between the districts of Playamar and La Carihuela. Measuring approximately 40 metres in width and over one kilometre in length, it is especially popular due to its proximity to the town centre and easy accessibility.
Another standout beach is La Carihuela Beach, which extends for about 2.1 kilometres and is also around 40 metres wide. Often considered one of Málaga’s best urban beaches, it is renowned for its clear waters and fine sand. Once home to a thriving fishing community, the area now attracts visitors with its seafront restaurants and beach bars, where local specialties such as fried fish, gazpacho, and other Andalusian dishes are served. The lively promenade is also a major draw, offering a mix of shops, restaurants, and nightlife venues along the waterfront.
