In the fledgeling days of the package holiday, Torremolinos grew from a quaint and simple fishing village into a thriving holiday resort for the first waves of tourists arriving at the nearby Málaga airport.
The town’s immediacy to Málaga, its seven kilometres of beach and its superb climate ensured it quickly became something of a favorite among northern Europeans; less than a three-hour flight away for most, Torremolinos offered tangible tropical-ness, almost year-round warmth and an intriguing peek into the Spanish way of life.
By the 1980s, was most certainly one of the liveliest resorts in Europe, but the proliferation of low air fares and more air routes opened up a greater range of choice for the consumer, and it soon fell out of favour with the average holidaymaker seeking fun in the sun. So it set about re-inventing itself.
First, the infrastructure was modernised, followed soon by bigger and better hotels and a greater choice of attractions. Soon, became a popular gay resort (it still is) and it has, in recent years, enhanced its appeal further, adding family-friendly attractions, traditional charm and a wider choice of commercial and investment opportunities than before.
The stretch of beach that runs the entire length of the resort is dotted with thousands of sun-loungers and parasols, and along the promenade are numerous restaurants and chiringuitos (most of them Spanish in character and cuisine), while the street-side promenade is home to a more international offering of cafés, restaurants, bars and shops.
Once in the town centre, street upon shop-fronted street stretches out before you, buzzing with activity day and night. Between the stores and gift shops sit plenty more bars and restaurants, most with an open-front where al fresco coffee-sipping and people-watching can be enjoyed at your leisure.

Fuengirola is a town and municipality located in the province of Málaga, in Andalucía, Spain. Located 33 kilometers southwest of the city of Málaga, the municipality of Fuengirola limits to the north with the municipalities of Benalmádena and Mijas, the latter term with which it also borders to the west and south. Furthermore, it is bathed by the Mediterranean Sea to the east.
During the 1960s, Fuengirola started to become a principal tourist center, eventually having the expected facilities for eating, lodging, and entertainment. The town has wide beaches along a promenade extending east and west from the town, that also includes smaller adjacent villages.
Fuengirola has a number of historical sites and open parks. The old port is still used today by the local Spanish fishermen. The Arab castle of Sohail remained an abandoned ruin until it was renovated. Now it hosts festivals, events and concerts throughout the summer.
The town is largely urban in character, with many high-rise blocks of flats near the seafront and elsewhere. The town is very accessible by bus coming from different parts of Málaga, Marbella, Torremolinos, Estepona, and Gibraltar. There is also a commuter train service starting from the Málaga city center, run by Cercanías Málaga. And the closest airport is the Málaga-Costa Del Sol Airport.

The municipal area of Fuengirola is one of the smallest in the province of Málaga, consisting merely of the coastal strip occupied by the town and the Santa Fe de Los Boliches district, which make up seven kilometers of excellent beaches.
Although it may have a Phoenician origin, the town’s history begins in the Arabic times with the construction of Sohail Castle for defense purposes, part of whose walls still remain until today. The town center still retains a certain traditional air, albeit it is today characterized by the hotels, apartments, restaurants, etc needed to its main source of income which is the sun and sand tourism.
Fuengirola was inhabited by the bástulos, the Phoenicians, and then later the Carthaginians. The Romans called it Suel, and the Arabs Sohail, the name of a star in which according to Ibn-Jallicam, could only be seen in the peninsula from this spot.
In the year 912, Abderraman III ordered the building of a fortress on the small hill that stands between the coastline and the mouth of the River Sohail; the remains of this said castle, though in a state of extreme disrepair, still form an important feature in the landscape of the coast of Fuengirola. It was then used for military purposes and to monitor the coast until the 19th century, playing a major part in the War of Independence.
On the 7th of August 1487, Fuengirola was captured by the Catholic Monarchs.
In the 17th century, the town acquired its present-day denomination which appears to be derived form the name by which it was referred to by the Genoese sailors who came to the shores and used dragnets, which they called “gironas.”
