Join us on this walking tour through Fuengirola, a well-known destination on the Costa del Sol in the province of Malaga, southern Andalucia.

One of the main tourist destinations on the Costa del Sol, Benalmádena is famous its leisure establishments, which include various amusement park, aquariums, casino, a cable car, and one of the largest marinas in Andalucía.
The population boom of the municipality of Benalmádena began in the 1950s with the development of mass tourism on the Spanish coast. During the time many established hotel, restaurants and businesses were opened, among these were Hotel Triton (1961), Tivoli World amusement park (1973), Torrequebrada casino and hotel (1979), Selwo Aquarium, Sea Life Aquarium, Cable car, Hotel Alay, and Chollocasa real estate agency. And in the later years, many more businesses were constructed.
The coastal area of Benalmádena is known by the name “Benalmádena Costa” and concentrates of the bulk of hotel establishments. The Benalmádena Puerto Marina is found here, as well as the promenade that crosses the municipality from the limits with the neighboring municipalities such as Torremolinos.

In the 1960s, Fuengirola started to become a principal tourist center, eventually having the expected facilities for eating, lodging, and entertainment. The town has wide beaches along a promenade extending east and west from the town, that also includes smaller adjacent villages.
Especially during the summer, the town plays host to crowd of visitors both Spanish and foreign, but in particular British. Almost 25% of registered inhabitants in the municipality come from other countries, mainly European (England, Ireland, Scotland, Finland and Sweden, among others), and also from Morocco and Argentina.
Fuengirola has a number of historical sites and open parks. The old port is still used today by the local Spanish fishermen. The Arab castle of Suhayl, or Suhail (Sohail), remained an abandoned ruin until renovations began in the year 1995. In 2000 the interior of the castle was completely renovated and the Sohail Castle began to host festivals, events and concerts throughout the summer. Furthermore, additional landscaping was completed in 2002.
The town is largely urban in character, with many high-rise blocks of flats near the seafront and elsewhere. There are some narrow streets with many low-rise villas. Considerable commercial and housing development is underway further inland. The town is very accessible by bus coming from different parts of Málaga, Marbella, Torremolinos, Estepona, and Gibraltar. There is also a commuter rail service starting from the Málaga city center, run by Cercanías Málaga. And the closest airport is the Málaga-Costa Del Sol Airport.

La Carihuela, a charming coastal district in Torremolinos, offers a lively atmosphere at night, with a mix of seafood restaurants, tapas bars, and lively pubs. The illuminated terraces are popular spots for both locals and tourists to enjoy the vibrant ambiance. While some establishments close earlier, the area maintains a lively buzz with the sounds of conversation, laughter, and occasional live music as the evening progresses.
La Carihuela continues to be a benchmark for beaches around the world. A place with modern tourist facilities, but which also respects its seafaring origins. The streets of this neighbourhood still maintain their fishing tradition, their humble origins and the conviction that the spirit of Torremolinos is harboured here.
There are still some of the small houses and huts that marked the beginnings of the La Carihuela neighbourhood. Of all the beaches on the Costa, it has the greatest influx of visitors, its characteristics and services making it one of the most desirable for relaxing and enjoying a break, and also for savouring the best fried fish. An authentic paradise for all the senses.

Torremolinos is located 7km west of Málaga airport and was the first Costa del Sol resort to be developed back in the early sixties when it was little more than a sleepy village, still today the town reflects its heritage with several of the original fresh fish bars located right in the shopping centre, incongruously flanked by exclusive boutiques and gift shops. In general, however, the wave of tourists who descended on the town in the fifties and sixties changed the face of Torremolinos for ever.
Over the years, Torremolinos has evolved as an attractive and appealing resort, noted for its clean sandy beaches, wide choice of hotels and restaurants and unparalleled variety of entertainment, activities and nightlife available. At the height of summer, the resort has a great appeal for the younger set, with a reputation for its hectic nightlife. Out of season, however, it takes on a different character. Now practically a suburb of Málaga, the atmosphere is much more Spanish, especially at weekends, with an air of friendliness and welcome.
Packed with tantalising shops, thronging with people of every nationality and located right at the heart of the town is the pedestrian only Calle San Miguel, the main artery of the town. This smartly paved pedestrianised street is lined with boutiques and shops with a great variety of goods on offer, attracting a constant flow of people. The Cuesta del Tajo, at the end of San Miguel, leads down a steep flight of steps through the old fishing district of El Bajondillo. This is a popular, picturesque area lined with restaurants and market-style kiosks, selling souvenirs. Down at the bottom is the beach of El Bajondillo.
The seafront promenade, Paseo Maritimo, extends east to Playamar and west to La Carihuela, continuing as far as Benalmádena Marina and beyond. The walk to La Carihuela offers pleasant sea views and some dramatic rock formations, before entering the old fishing village of La Carihuela which is a delightful area of picturesque simple houses and bougainvillea clad patios where old men play dominoes and drink anis. Many of the original cottages still exist and not all have been turned into bars or shops. Some have stood still in time. Wander around the area early one morning before the tourists wake up and see a different world. This is the area also known for its excellent seafood restaurants and chiringuitos (beach bars).
