Torremolinos is a typical product of the tourist boom of the 1960s which turned this small fishing village into a large, densely-populated town committed entirely to sun and sand tourism, showcasing large beaches and facilities related to it.

The Pimentel Tower found near Calle San Miguel is the town’s most noteworthy monument, a proof and trace of the town’s long and enduring history.

The origins and name of the town is derived from a watchtower (torre) and the mills (molinos) built there to grind wheat. These towers were positioned perpendicularly to the sea in order to harness the hydraulic power generated by the waters flowing into it. The coast was fortified with castles and defensive towers during the 18th century. Now some of the traces are still visible in the town.

In the 20th century, Torremolinos has experience a drastic change during the progressive development of tourism. During the 1960s the town has begun its transformation into one of the world’s best-known holiday resorts.
