La Carihuela is a charming seaside district in Torremolinos, located in the south-western part of the town. It is an ideal place for a leisurely stroll, thanks to its spacious beachfront promenade, which stretches from El Bajondillo and Los Álamos in one direction to Benalmádena’s Puerto Marina in the other.

Traditionally, La Carihuela was a fishing village, with its residents relying on the abundant fish and shellfish of the Mediterranean Sea along Málaga Bay. The rise of tourism in the 1950s transformed the area, creating new opportunities as restaurants and chiringuitos (traditional beachfront eateries) opened, allowing both locals and visitors to enjoy freshly caught seafood.

Despite its modern development, La Carihuela has retained much of its authentic character. Its narrow Andalusian streets, traditional shops, and welcoming atmosphere continue to reflect its rich heritage. Today, the district is also renowned for its outstanding seafood cuisine, making it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the region’s culinary traditions.

Located just 7 km west of Málaga Airport, Torremolinos was the first resort to emerge on the Costa del Sol. Once a quiet fishing village, it began its transformation in the early 1960s into one of Spain’s most popular holiday destinations. Despite its modern development, the town still retains traces of its fishing heritage, with traditional seafood restaurants nestled alongside stylish boutiques, cafés, and gift shops in the town centre. The tourism boom of the 1950s and 1960s reshaped Torremolinos, creating the vibrant resort visitors know today.

Today, Torremolinos is a lively coastal destination celebrated for its long sandy beaches, extensive selection of hotels and restaurants, and wide range of leisure activities. During the summer months, the resort attracts visitors looking to enjoy its energetic nightlife and entertainment scene. Outside the peak season, however, the atmosphere becomes more relaxed and distinctly Andalusian, with locals returning to the beaches, cafés, and promenades, giving the town a warm and authentic character.

At the heart of Torremolinos is Calle San Miguel, the town’s bustling pedestrian shopping street. Lined with fashion boutiques, local stores, cafés, and souvenir shops, it is one of the busiest and most vibrant areas in the resort. At its southern end, the Cuesta del Tajo leads down towards El Bajondillo, passing through one of the town’s oldest neighbourhoods. This charming area is filled with restaurants, small market-style stalls, and picturesque streets that eventually open onto the popular El Bajondillo Beach.

Running alongside the coastline, the Paseo Marítimo promenade stretches east towards Playamar and west through La Carihuela, continuing as far as Benalmádena Marina. The walk offers beautiful Mediterranean views, dramatic coastal rock formations, and easy access to several of Torremolinos’ beaches. La Carihuela, the town’s former fishing quarter, remains one of its most charming neighbourhoods. Its narrow streets, whitewashed houses, colourful bougainvillea, and relaxed atmosphere provide a glimpse of the area’s past. Many original fishermen’s cottages still stand, while others have been transformed into inviting cafés, tapas bars, and shops. The district is particularly renowned for its outstanding seafood restaurants and traditional chiringuitos, making it one of the best places to experience the flavours and character of the Costa del Sol.
