I wanna come in december. How's the weather at the beginning of December 😊
To all readers… I'm from Málaga. I was born right next to the Cathedral (La Manquita, because it lacks a tower). I just wanted to let you know that in 2023, Forbes magazine ranked it #1 among the 20 best cities to live in the world. And some compare it to Barcelona 😅… #13 in Forbes.
You realize where you live when you travel… you always want to go back, hahaha.
"Mini Barcelona, without all the problems"…..totally agree……..great video guys!
This is great a friend and I are planning a visit
Lovely
Malaga tachna ataas 🎉❤
But what about the other side of the story?
Malaga is beautiful, no doubt about that. The sun, the beaches, the food – it’s hard not to fall in love with the place. But behind the palm trees and good vibes, there’s also a growing problem that a lot of people don’t see or talk about.
The number of tourists here has exploded. In 2024 alone, Costa del Sol had nearly 14.5 million visitors, and Málaga city had over 1.6 million hotel guests. That’s massive. And of course, tourism brings money – it’s a big part of Spain’s economy. But when too many apartments are turned into Airbnbs and short-term rentals, locals get pushed out.
Rent prices have gone crazy. Whole neighborhoods are now off-limits for new tourist rentals because it’s gotten so bad – in some areas, more than 8% of homes are holiday lets. That might not sound like a lot, but trust me, it makes a huge difference when you’re trying to find a place to live and there’s nothing left but overpriced flats aimed at tourists.
And then there’s something even harder to watch: the growing number of homeless people in Málaga.
Over 220 people are sleeping on the streets, and that’s just what’s officially reported. Red Cross says it’s likely way more. A lot of them aren’t addicts or anything like that – they’re just regular people who couldn’t keep up with rent or lost their job during COVID. Some are in their 30s and 40s, just trying to survive. It’s heartbreaking.
So yeah, come visit Malaga – it’s amazing. But I really hope people also start talking about the real-life impact tourism is having on the people who actually live here. Not just the party, but the pressure too.
If we want Malaga to stay magical, it has to be livable – not just for tourists, but for the people who call it home.
Going there for the first time ever, in Spain for a week. Thanks so much for your guide!!! You are so passionate, and I think this is brilliant place to eventually retire to…Switzerland being way too expensive for us…although beautiful too ALTHOUGH the cold nature of the swiss germans, isnt nice, been here 14 years, needing nice friendly people…(?). Yes we plan to look at Estapona, Marbella, Ronda, Granada and the other beaches if we have time in one week..! Cant wait!
