Cars swept away in Malaga, Spain today, Red Warning Issued for Heavy Rain and Flooding
Malaga on red alert due to torrential rains: overflows and flooding due to the DANA. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated the red warning of extreme risk for torrential rains in the Sol and Guadalhorce regions in the province of Malaga, where the rainfall has been occurring with intensity since early last night.
The red alert will remain active from 12:00 to 16:00 hours, when rainfall of 120 mm could accumulate in 12 hours, while from the afternoon, Aemet expects the rains to subside. Emergency services have responded to more than 70 incidents during the early hours of Tuesday morning, specifically from late Monday to early Tuesday morning, due to the storm and heavy rainfall recorded in the province of Malaga.
For their part, the Provincial Fire Brigade (CPB) and the road maintenance workers of the Malaga Provincial Council have registered 35 interventions in all the regions of the province due to the heavy rains that have been falling since last night. This situation has caused classes to be suspended at the CEIP Nescania in Valle de Abdalajís due to the flooding of the centre. The same has happened at the CEIP Federico García Lorca in the town of Barranco de Zafra, in the locality of Almogía.

On November 13, 2024, Southern Spain was battered by torrential rainfall, leading to devastating floods in several regions, including the popular tourist destination of Malaga. The extreme weather event, known as a “Dana,” brought heavy rain and strong winds to the area, causing widespread disruption and damage.
In Malaga, thousands of residents were evacuated from their homes as rivers overflowed their banks and flash floods swept through streets and towns. The city’s main hospital was forced to limit services to emergencies only, as water levels rose inside the facility. Schools and businesses were closed, and flights were delayed or canceled as the airport experienced significant disruption.

On Tuesday night, 12th of November, when the alarm went off on all mobile phones, the Junta de Andalucía had previously activated the first level of emergency of the three levels in its plan. Aemet had declared a red alert for possible torrential rain and indicated the risk of flooding. Classes were cancelled throughout the province, trials suspended – like so many businesses that have decided not to raise the metal fence on Wednesday – and the first evacuations in the Guadalhorce valley. Almost 3,000 people had to leave their homes, of which only 30 used the municipal pavilions to spend the night.
On Wednesday, all public transport remains cut off. The EMT has suspended services and taken its cars to depots, taxi stations have asked drivers to stay at home and the Metro and railways are cut off. The María Zambrano Station has been evacuated and the water has affected the security systems between Málaga and Los Prados. The Airport has been isolated and municipal buses have had to go to transport 400 passengers. One flight has been suspended and five have been diverted to Seville. Many roads are closed, if they are not flooded.
The day after the DANA in Málaga clearly shows the effect of the heavy rains on streets and shops. Cleaning workers, individuals and owners of the affected shops are busy bailing out water and removing the rubbish and debris left by the action of the water from the street. A job that is repeated at different points and simultaneously and that will take some time. Although personal misfortunes have been avoided, the storm has left material damage.
With a sky now clear of the leaden grey and the sun returning the most usual image to Málaga, the Centre gives the impression of a certain normality. The bars that remained closed on Tuesday raised their shutters. What was reminiscent of this week’s heavy rainfall were the rubble and stones dragged by the flood.
Taking into account the images on the Internet of the flooded streets left on Tuesday, the contrast is evident. There are no traces of great devastation in the Centre. That does not mean that the owners of the shops that were flooded do not have to work hard today to remove the remains of the rain and carry out a thorough cleaning.
Throughout the Málaga province, the affected municipalities and their residents were working hard until today to return to normality as soon as possible. In total, there have been a thousand incidents in the province, although, except for a few cases that will take longer, the general feeling is that things will return to normal in record time.
