It is the largest privately owned residential development in Andalusia, and is located in the municipality of San Roque, province of Cádiz. It was the dream of a couple of industrialists from the Philippines, Joseph McMicking, and Mercedes Zóbel, to build a city similar to Palm Springs, California, in southern Europe. Comprising a 25 square kilometer stretch bordering the Mediterranean Sea, and famous the world over for its luxurious lifestyle, some of the wealthiest and most powerful families in Spain, Russia and the UK reside in Sotogrande in villas and apartments, many of which built on islands within the Sotogrande marina, which is considered the best marina in the Western Mediterranean, with berths for over 800 boats.
