Torremolinos celebrate Holland Day with gastronomy and typical musical performances

La plaza Chiriva de la Carihuela will host the celebration of Koningsdag or Holland Day in April, a festival that reaches its eighth edition and is dedicated to Dutch culture and gastronomy. A day that has been presented by the mayor, Margarita del Cid, along with the events councillor, José Manuel Ruiz Rivas, and the president of the Dutch Community of Torremolinos, Sergio Effendi.

“The numbers demonstrate the importance of this community within Torremolinos, with over 700 registered residents as of today, representing a growth of more than 20 percent in just one year. Additionally, recently the council approved the naming of one of the passages in La Carihuela as Kingdom of Holland; and a few months ago we inaugurated another passage leading to Isabel Manoja and named it after our beloved pianist Pía Beck,” stated the mayor.

la carihuela – spain – Costa Del Sol – Andalusia – Malaga – March 2024
Welcome to La Carihuela, a picturesque neighborhood nestled along the sun-kissed shores of Torremolinos, Spain. As we embark on this enchanting journey, we’ll delve into the vibrant tapestry of Andalusian culture, savoring the sights and sounds of this coastal gem.

As we set foot on the promenade, the rhythmic melody of crashing waves serenades us, while the salty breeze carries whispers of history and tradition. La Carihuela, once a humble fishing village, now boasts a blend of old-world charm and modern allure.

Our stroll begins amidst a kaleidoscope of colors, as traditional whitewashed buildings adorned with terracotta roofs line the cobblestone streets. Flower-laden balconies cascade down the facades, adding a splash of vibrant hues to the tranquil surroundings.

The heart of La Carihuela pulses with life as locals and visitors alike meander through the bustling streets. The aroma of freshly grilled sardines wafts from the quaint chiringuitos (beach bars), enticing passersby with the promise of culinary delights.

Venturing further, we encounter the picturesque fishing boats bobbing gently in the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The fishermen, with weathered hands and warm smiles, cast their nets, preserving age-old traditions in a rapidly evolving world.

As we traverse the sun-dappled alleys, the soul-stirring strains of flamenco music beckon us towards hidden plazas and cozy tavernas. Here, beneath the shade of swaying palms, locals gather to revel in the timeless artistry of Andalusian dance and song.

The golden sands of La Carihuela beckon us to linger a while, to bask in the embrace of the Mediterranean sun and dip our toes into the crystalline waters. Along the promenade, vibrant market stalls offer a treasure trove of souvenirs, from handcrafted ceramics to intricately woven textiles, each imbued with the spirit of Andalusia.

As the sun begins its descent, casting a fiery glow across the horizon, we bid farewell to La Carihuela, forever etching its beauty into the recesses of our memories.

The apartments that we see along the promenade and a block back, are they fully occupied or do they tend to Holiday rentals?
Is this locality mainly aimed at the more senior folk or is it just a winter impression?
Are hotels being used to house migrants similar to what's happening in the UK?
To get quicker medical treatment and jump the waiting list, is it worth going out to Spain for the 90 days and paying for your treatment there?
Cost of Living compared to the UK… Petrol, utilities, weekly shop?
